Rachel Norton's Weak Blog View on Lay offs. NO INCUMBENTS

http://rachelnorton.com/issues/seniority-and-layoffs-the-skip-vote/

When you go out to vote S.F. teachers don't forget how these divisions among us are created and reinforced with bad leadership. We need a change!

SFUSD Seniority Skip a True story regarding last year’s Teacher Lay offs in San Francisco
Situation: The district had argued that its investment in the zones, including millions of dollars in federal School Improvement Grant funding that has covered professional development and teacher coaching, would be lost if those educators were laid off. Even though historically most layoffs have been rescinded by the time the new school year begins, district officials said they worry some teachers might resign in order to avoid the uncertainty.  Excerpt from 5/8/12 San Francisco Examiner.

Personal Perspective: We are currently in the middle of an election in which I’m going out to let teachers know how their vote matters.  Not only with statewide propositions, but with the local school board race. The above situation is constantly a source of discussion as I go out as a UESF spokesperson saying, “No incumbents for school board this November 6th, 2012”.  I feel that the school board was seriously in the wrong when they decided to violate Seniority rights when it comes to lay offs.  I felt then as I do now that the S.F. School Board has just become a rubber stamp for the district.  The board as a whole has forgotten who is the boss; the parents and the teachers not the superintendent.  My questions still to this day even though an administrative law judge said what the board did was illegal and was in violation of law code, is why?  Why wasn’t’ there more time to review the law and what is just?  Why aren’t all the schools (not just 14 of them) who have high poverty considered Superintendent Zone schools? Why do the incumbents feel like they should have a spot at the School board when now the teachers have been divided through these tactics of right wing politics?

When you go out to vote S.F. teachers don't forget how these divisions among us are created and reinforced with bad leadership.  We need a change!

PARS Earnings to Be Released to Paras
Paraprofessionals Urged to Re-invest Funds to Avoid Taxes and Penalties
Several Financial Counseling Sessions Available to Aid Decision
This week all paraprofessionals were sent a letter by the SFUSD informing them of the need to choose a new place for the money in their PARS accounts. The letter was sent along with the annual statement from PARS for the period ending June 30, 2012. All paras, and former paras, who have money in the PARS system must decide by December 21, 2012 where to invest their PARS assets.
Paras can choose one of three options for their PARS money: Directly rolling it over into a 403(b), directly rolling it over into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), or withdrawing the money. If paras decide to withdraw the funds, state and federal taxes and penalties could take as much as 50% of the value of the funds. UESF therefore urges paras to investigate all other options before withdrawing the money directly.
If paras do need some money in the short term, one investment option is to choose the 403(b) plan. These plans allow you to borrow up to 50% of the value of your assets, up to $50,000, without incurring any penalties so long as you pay the loan back within five years.
In addition to choosing between a 403(b) and an IRA, paraprofessionals will also need to choose which type of investment to place their money in. Based on their age and the value of their other investments, paras will need to choose how much risk they are willing to tolerate when re-investing their funds.
Upcoming Financial Counseling Sessions
To assist paraprofessionals in making their decision, the SFUSD will offer several counseling sessions in the coming weeks throughout the district. Mosher Financial will also offer additional sessions as well. All paras are strongly encouraged to attend one of these sessions in order to make the best decision for their money.

2,000 Americans will gather at Ocean Beach in San Francisco to spell out “DUMP CITIZENS UNITED” with their bodies

On October 13 at 10:45 a.m., just weeks before the 2012 election, 2,000 Americans will gather at Ocean Beach in San Francisco to spell out “DUMP CITIZENS UNITED” with their bodies, in 100-foot-tall letters, visible from the air.
But this event won’t happen without you and your friends.

Corporations are NOT people, but Citizens United is still the law of the land, allowing corporations and Super PACs unaccountable influence over our elections. There is a movement to change that, and Courage Campaign is inviting you to join it.

This Saturday, October 13, thousands of real, non-corporate people will gather at Ocean Beach in San Francisco to spell it out: "DUMP CITIZENS UNITED!"

The Dump Citizens United human banner is a collaboration between local artist/organizer Brad Newsham and The Other 98%, a netroots community with 300,000+ members, plus a coalition of other progressive groups that includes CREDO, Common Cause, Code Pink, Courage Campaign and an ever-growing list of others.

This gathering will continue a Bay Area tradition of people from all walks of life uniting to send a strong and beautiful message to the country and the world. We hope you and your friends will join us for this colorful, peaceful, free (and brief) event.

Please arrive 10:45am. Helicopter overhead at noon. Beautiful postcard (a photo like the one above) in your mailbox within days.

Thanks for all you do,

Eddie Kurtz, Director of Campaigns
