SFUSD Seniority Skip a True
story regarding last year’s Teacher Lay offs in San Francisco
Situation: The
district had argued that its investment in the zones, including millions of
dollars in federal School Improvement Grant funding that has covered
professional development and teacher coaching, would be lost if those educators
were laid off. Even though historically most layoffs have been rescinded by the
time the new school year begins, district officials said they worry some teachers
might resign in order to avoid the uncertainty. Excerpt from 5/8/12 San Francisco Examiner.
Personal
Perspective: We are currently in the middle of an election in which I’m going
out to let teachers know how their vote matters. Not only with statewide propositions, but with the local school
board race. The above situation is constantly a source of discussion as I go
out as a UESF spokesperson saying, “No incumbents for school board this
November 6th, 2012”. I
feel that the school board was seriously in the wrong when they decided to
violate Seniority rights when it comes to lay offs. I felt then as I do now that the S.F. School Board has just
become a rubber stamp for the district.
The board as a whole has forgotten who is the boss; the parents and the teachers
not the superintendent. My
questions still to this day even though an administrative law judge said what
the board did was illegal and was in violation of law code, is why? Why wasn’t’ there more time to review
the law and what is just? Why aren’t
all the schools (not just 14 of them) who have high poverty considered
Superintendent Zone schools? Why do the incumbents feel like they should have a
spot at the School board when now the teachers have been divided through these
tactics of right wing politics?
When you go out to vote S.F. teachers don't forget how these divisions among us are created and reinforced with bad leadership. We need a change!
