Going to Continue Teaching? Then Open This Now! UNION POWER!!

Hi,

The election results in November may cast a very ominous shadow over the future of our work in public education.  If you’ve been paying attention to what’s going on this past year, you know this is not a rhetorical comment (Just check out today's Chron headline!).  If Prop. 30 fails, the funds to carry on our work in public education will be even more severely slashed (we’re already number 47 of the 50 states in per student funding!). If Prop. 32 passes, the ability of our unions to defend ourselves and protect the valuable work we do will be greatly diminished, and Corporate SuperPacs’ unlimited spending power to control our future will be untouched.  We’ll be in the same heap of trouble faced by our brothers and sisters in many other states!

Here is what could happen if we don’t meet the challenge over the next few months:

* Skyrocketing expectations of you and all educators, slashing of resources, overloading classes, and increasing stress levels;

*Gutting of your union Contract, collective bargainingrights, pension/retiree health benefits; and

*Increased targeting of educators by major corporations, right wing politicians and their billionaire benefactors as “public enemy number one.”
Now is the time to fight back!  We need you to make an investment in your future, and doyour share to help out in the coming 3 months.  We’re asking you to do two things now:

1.     Attend the election campaign training this Saturday at:
Holiday Inn Golden Gateway
1500 Van Ness Ave. at Pine St.
Saturday, August 11th, 9A-4P
Breakfast, Lunch and Validated Parking Provided!

Please email mkimura@uesf.org or call now to our office (415-956-8373) to register—and save me a phone call asking you to come.

       2.  Call three friends, family members or colleagues to encourage them to join you.

I’m looking forward to working with you again this year, and successfully facing these challenges!

In Unity,

Allan

IMPORTANT NOTICES FOR UESF MEMBERS:
*If you have a work site or contract interpretation issue, please first contact your Building Representative and/or a member of your Union Building Committee.  We are working with your UBC to assure they are fully informed and have the most current information possible.
*In any proposed meeting with an administrator discussing anything that could lead to disciplinary action, always assure that you have a UBC member or other representative with you before agreeing to meet.
